It said the tornado was on the ground for about two minutes, four miles west of Hannaford, or about 14 miles southwest of Cooperstown. It was reported by a “stormchaser,” according to the weather service, and the information is preliminary. Trees and tree limbs were knocked down, but there were no reports of injuries. An F1 tornado hit four miles south-southeast of New Rockford, N.D., at 1:08 p.m. today, knocking a path though a shelter belt of trees on the east side of U.S. Highway 281, the weather service said. That would be roughly in line with the tornado reported west of Hannaford two hours later and about 45 miles southeast, pretty much following the line of a BNSF rail line. Hail as big as 2.75 inches in diameter were reported across the same region, the largest reported about 15 miles north of Valley City. Thunderstorm winds also were blamed for downed trees in several locations, including in Bemidji. Heavy wind and rains cut visibility to near zero shortly before 8 p.m. today about three miles east of Gwinner, in southeast North Dakota and laying tree branches across a highway. Wind speeds were as high as 72 mph, the weather service said. The weather service issued a tornado warning for northeastern Barnes County and northwestern Cass County until 5:15 p.m. today because radar showed a severe thunderstorm capable of producing tornadoes at 4:09 p.m. moving from about 19 miles northeast of Valley City, N.D., southeast at about 25 mph. The thunderstorm was expected to be near Page about 4:35 p.m., Ayr about 4:50 p.m. and Erie and Buffalo about 4:55 p.m., and Absaraka about 5:05 p.m. Earlier, the weather service said a tornado warning was in effect southeastern Griggs County, northeastern Barnes County and southwestern Steele County in east-central North Dakota until 4:15 p.m. A severe thunderstorm with the potential to create tornadoes was about 38 miles northwest of Valley City was moving southeast at about 20 mph. The storm was expected to reach Pillsbury, N.D., which is 20 miles north of Valley City, about 4:15 p.m. An apparent tornado ripped the roof off the shop at the Robert Campbell farm six miles northwest of Hannaford, N.D., about 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Ryan Campbell and his parents “hit the basement,” as they heard the storm approaching. It took out some trees, too, but didn’t damage any equipment or hurt anyone, Ryan Campbell said. The Campbells estimate the damage to the shop roof at about $2,500. A neighbor, Yvonne Hetland, who lives about a mile from the Campbells, saw the funnel cloud descend to close to the ground, but didn’t see it actually touch down, she said. She took photos of it. Campbell said he, too, didn’t see the tornado, but assumes the funnel cloud came down at least far enough to wreck the shop roof. A tornado also was reported Sunday afternoon a few miles south of the Campbell farm, but he didn’t see it, Ryan Campbell said. Farmers near Northwood, N.D., reported high winds Saturday afternoon, estimated at 60 to 70 mph, that toppled trees and laid flat some corn fields, where the corn was five feet high or better. The high winds also left a mess of downed tree branches in Northwood, residents said.
