A wildfire burned about 100 acres in the mountains behind Lake Mountain Estates in Saratoga Springs Friday evening. The blaze came within a mile of dozens of homes. Neighbors were nervous particularly because they’ve been through this before about four years ago and understand how quickly fire can spread through the tall, thick and dry brush. “We started getting stuff like birth certificates,” said neighbor 16-year-old Stephanie Hemenez. “I had my 72-hour kit ready. I knew exactly what I wanted to take,” said neighbor LuAnn Albaugh. The fire that came through in June of 2007 was an even closer call so this time neighbors were even more prepared. “The biggest thing is I had to come to grips with maybe losing my home and losing everything in my home. I have a lot of antiques and this time I had come to grips and new that things can be replaced,” said Albaugh. LT Darren Gilbert of the Utah County Sheriff’s office told ABC 4 that strong southern winds blowing north were creating quite a fight for fire crews. In a collaborative effort through several departments there were tankers, planes and a chopper tackling the blaze. Planes were dropping water and the a helicopter was dropping repellant to keep the fire contained. Their efforts paid off and at about 6:30 crews were confident the worse was behind them. “Thanks for everything!” said Hemenez. “Fabulous job. Like they did last time,” said Albaugh. The investigation continues into how the fire started. Emergency responders say they put lives and property before anything else. A crew is staying in the area overnight to make sure all hotspots die out and nothing reignites.
