A passenger bus lies half buried in rubble after a landslide due to heavy rainfall on the outskirts of Jammu in Indian-administered Kashmir. Landslides triggered by heavy rains have also affected the Jammu-Srinagar motorway, stranding several hundred vehicles, reports say.

  Jammu, Aug 11: At least nine persons were killed and 20 others injured—three of them critically due to heavy rains which wreaked havoc across Jammu on Thursday. About 30 houses were collapsed while two dozen vehicles were buried in separate incidents of landslides and mudslides.
Several bridges were washed away in flash floods while most of the parts of Jammu division witnessed power breakdown. Twin routes of Jammu-Srinagar highway via Manda forest and Panjtirthi were blocked due to landslides, affecting normal traffic adversely. People in Samba district blocked highway for four hours after rainwater entered their houses, causing extensive damage to household items. They also resorted to stone pelting and caused damage to a passenger bus. Besides almost all major routes connecting different parts of Jammu region witnessed long traffic snarls due to over-flooding of nallahs and water-logging.
Official sources told Greater Kashmir that six people were killed when a passenger bus, which was on its way to Jammu from Mahanpur, about 110-km northeast of Jammu, got caught in a flash-flood and rolled down into a nallah in Kathua district.
Ten passengers also injured, two of them critically, official sources said, adding that injured have been hospitalised in Mahanpur hospital and two of the critically injured rushed to district hospital Kathua.
“The ill-fated bus had started its journey from Mahanpur and was on way to Jammu when it was caught in the swirling waters,” said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kathua Jagdish Lal Sharma.
He added, “The bus was not overloaded as there were only 12-15 passengers in it, but the rest is a matter of investigation”.
The deceased have been identified as Paras Ram (55) son of Punu Ram of Nowshera, Sakinder (28) son of Harbans Lal of Kathad, Jamat Ali (35) son of Mohammed Yousaf of Dyali, Bishna Devi (16) daughter of Mulk Raj of Nowshera, Ravinder Singh (22) son of Chaman Lal and Tara Chand (40) son of Hans Raj of Danamlar.
Two persons were killed and three others injured in separate house collapse incidents due to heavy rains in the wee hours Thursday morning.
A massive landslide triggered by incessant rains on circular road near Panjtirthi crashed through a residential house and shop killing a labourer from Orissa. One person also received injuries in the incident.
“A major landslide took place at around 4:30 am and swept away the gate of a temple and shop while a house buried under debris, causing the on-the-spot death of a labourer and subjecting critical injuries to other,” Ram Krishan, a local resident of Panjtirthi said.
The deceased has been identified as Praji Pradhan, son of Maharjai, a resident of Orissa while injured has been identified as Sudershan son of Kesar, resident of Orissa. They were residing as tenants in the house.
In another incident, one person was killed and two others were injured when a house collapsed in Bantalab area.
“The house of Shamsher Lal collapsed in Bantalab area in which Ashan Rain, wife of Lal, died, while Lal and his son were injured,” said police sources.
In yet another tragic incident, a woman identified as Asha Devi, wife Sushil of Top Sherkhania in Jammu city buried alive in a house collapse incident. Her husband and son also received critical injuries. They were shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Jammu.
Reports said that a number of structures were also collapsed and there were landslides at several places in Panjtirthi, Manda and Sidhra areas due to heavy rains.
Traffic on circular road between Sidhra bridge to Deputy Commissioner office was blocked due to massive landslides at over 10 places. Several vehicles parked alongside road were buried in mudslides and suffered extensive damage.
Kunjwani-Bishnah road link was closed for traffic after a major bridge near Bhandu Rakh washed away. Three tippers were also washed away in flash floods. A bridge connecting village Rihal with Keral Manasa in Bishnah tehsil also washed away due to flash floods.
There was also another landslide near Civil Secretariat area in Jammu city and traffic remained blocked for three hours. But, later debris were cleared and traffic resumed on the road.
In Greater Kailash area in the outskirts of Jammu city, over a dozen vehicles, mostly two vehicles, suffered extensive damage in flash-flood. Heavy downpour subjected the residents to great hardships as houses remained submerged in three to five feet rainwater.
Two boundary walls, which were constructed along the nallah, were damaged near Mecca Masjid in Bathandi. Similarly, three boundary walls in Jallalabad area of Sunjwan got collapsed after heavy rains.
Due to heavy rains many low laying areas of Jammu city including Shaktinagar, Bohri, Talab Tilloo, Canal road, Bagwati Nagar, Satwari, Jewel, Lakar Mandi New Plot, Gandhi Nagar, Pantirthi, Bantalab, Muthi and Bhawani Nagar areas were flooded.
Talking to the Greater Kashmir, Chief Scientist Agrometerology of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology Jammu (SKUAST-J) Dr M K Khushu said, “We recorded 102 mm rainfall between 3:30 am to 8:30 am in Chatta area while other parts of Jammu recorded 143 mm rainfall in five hours. Samba also received over 100 mm rainfall in these five hours. It was highest and severest rainfall in shortest period during this monsoon. It was not good for crops and caused extensive damage in the region.” The Chief Scientist said it could be the maximum rainfall of the ongoing monsoon season.
Five houses in Shiv Nagar locality of Supwal in district Samba were partially collapsed causing injuries to five persons. The injured have been identified as Dharam Chand, Kajal Devi, Daya Ram and Darshana Devi in Shiv Nagar, all the residents of Supwal. Local residents and shopkeepers also staged a noisy demonstration after flood water entered their houses.
The Samba-Mansar road remained closed for traffic four hours due to overflowing of Mananu nallah.
In Mendhar tehsil of border district Poonch, eight members of a family had narrow escape in house collapse. Reports said that Abdul Qayoom, son of Mohammad Khan resident of Basuni in Balakote along with other family members had narrow escape after his house got collapsed.
Also due to heavy rains, there was a great damage to crops in Rajouri, Balakote and Budhal areas due to heavy rains.
Divisional Commissioner Jammu Pawan Kotwal told Greater Kashmir that Jammu region has suffered huge loss due to heavy rains and flash floods.
“All Deputy Commissioners, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Chief Engineers, Superintending Engineers and revenue officials assisted by police were personally supervising the situation and the evaluation of exact loss would take sometime,” he said.
